Periods are a fact of life. For women living in poverty, there is an added challenge of acquiring monthly feminine hygiene products. For women experiencing homelessness, it is an even bigger challenge.
In 2009, Mandi Fields toured a local foodbank in London, Ontario and discovered an empty shelf in the non-food cupboard. Knowing the cost of these items, and their importance to women’s health and dignity, she felt the need could not continue to be overlooked and came up with a plan to provide a solution and so “Tampon Tuesday” was born.
United Way’s across the Country are working together to help support an effort to provide Feminine Hygiene Products to women in need. On Tuesday, March 6th, 2018 United Way Sault Ste. Marie & Algoma District will be hosting our first annual “Tampon Tuesday” event. Community members will be invited to come together for a night of socializing, networking and support for women. The cost of admission will be one unopened package of feminine hygiene products that will be donated within the Community to local hubs, shelters and/or drop-in centers.
